Dopp Kit Gift Box

I’m so excited to share today’s project with you! I’m calling it a Dopp Kit Gift Box! It has a unique closure and beautiful edges – and the magnetic snapping closure is so fun! I still can’t get enough of the beautiful Countryside Inn Designer Series Paper. I hope you’ll be brave and give this project a try!

This Dopp Kit Gift Box is inspired by Indra Biendl’s Toiletry Bag, “Pixiefied” and resized! This Dopp Kit Gift Box reminds me so much of my Dad, aka “Papa Pixie”! He had this same style Dopp kit for as long as I can remember – fond memories! And if you’re wondering what a Dopp kit is, ChatGPT to the rescue!

A Dopp kit is a small bag used for storing toiletries and grooming items when traveling. The term “Dopp kit” is most commonly used in the United States and is named after a German leather-goods maker named Charles Doppelt, who designed the original kit in the early 20th century. It typically includes items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shaving cream, deodorant, and other personal care products. Dopp kits are often made of leather, canvas, or other durable materials and are designed to be compact and easy to pack.

This box closes by overlapping the top pieces and then folding the sides down. Here’s a side view:

Too keep this box closed, I used neodymium magnets from my favorite magnet supplier, Total Element (use coupon code PAPERPIXIE for 10% off)!

Here’s how the box looks open:

What I really love about this box are the smooth edges on the top! It’s just so unique and beautiful to hold and look at!

I hope you won’t be intimidated by this box and brave enough to try it – It’s easier than it looks! If adding the magnets is too fussy for you (I get it!), then you can either use Velcro Dots or you could try adding a circular or rectangular cutout to the sides for the triangular points to tuck in, much like the old Perfect Parcels Dies we used to carry!

Here’s the template for reference (not to scale):
